We are incredibly proud to announce that Thread has become a Certified B Corporation, joining an elite but growing league of companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. We celebrated this evolution of our company with a new website launch. Go check it out. I’ll wait. Nice, eh ?
If you follow Thread at all, you know that we built this company from day one around a mission to create dignified jobs where they are needed most, improve the environment, and create the most responsible supply chains on the planet to help our partner brands instantly improve their impact. The assessment and process to gain our B Corp certification (think ‘LEED Certification’ or ‘Certified Organic’ but for whole businesses not just buildings and tofu) was intensive, but also affirmed that we built a company that has positive impact inextricably coded in our DNA. Every success we have as a business means success for the communities in which we work.
The performance standards we are held to as a B Corp are comprehensive and transparent. Unlike traditional corporations, Certified B Corporations are required to consider the impact of their decisions not only on their shareholders, but all stakeholders including workers, suppliers, community, consumers, and the environment.
When Ian and I started talking over beers about starting this crazy journey that became Thread, I remember realizing that my dream job didn’t exist in the marketplace – so we made our own dream jobs. An unsurprising thing happens when you create a job and company the way you think it should be done – you end up liking the results. We specifically looked at B Corp criteria when we made our operating agreement and made early decisions knowing that, in a couple of years, earning our certification would be a sign we were still on the right course. As COO, it provides tools that help me keep the company on the right path, and a network to learn from and help our company grow responsibly.
We are honored be among companies like Patagonia and Method and already feel welcomed into the community by our peers and even some potential brand partners. You’ll see me write a lot more about being a Certified B Corp in the coming months. This isn’t just a big deal for us; it’s a big deal for the planet that over 900 businesses have committed themselves to use their business to make the world better. Not in a sunshine-and-rainbows marketing gimmick way, but a real, measurable, business-driven way that will, I believe, become the only way in which our kids and grandkids will ever consider to run a business.
